Feral Research

Feral. Research?

prefix: para-, par-: beside, near, alongside; throughout. abnormal, incorrect. resembling.

“Like para-miltary or a parentheses, the work of a para-academic is described as existing only in relation to “real” scholarship.

Similarly, art-making which occurs outside of the standard channels is at best called "outsider," perhaps "maker" or "project" or "craft," but rarely art.

But there it is. It still exists, growling and snapping sometimes, aloof and unconcerned at others, but standing on its own four legs. What are we to make of this?

Feral is the term I use to acknowledge the inevitable relationship of this work to an established practice but, from where I skulk in the shadows, also put everything back in proper perspective. This work is unapologetically its own small useless thing, following a clear but unique trajectory over nearly two decades. I don't care what you call it, I do care that you see it.”
